OUR MANDATE
The principal mandate of KENAS is to accredit and exercise oversight over organizations, both private and public, that carry out conformity assessment activities. These organizations include; testing laboratories, calibration laboratories, medical laboratories, certification bodies, and inspection and verification bodies.
  • Assess and accredit conformity assessment bodies.
  • Promote accreditation in Kenya.
  • Promote mutual recognition of the competence of accredited bodies and equivalence of accreditation schemes.
  • Establish and nurture relations and cooperation with regional and international accreditation bodies, persons, associations and organizations that the Service may consider necessary for the furtherance of the objectives of this Act.
  • Participate in the formulation and monitoring of national, regional and international accreditation guidelines and standards.
  • Create public awareness on accreditation, collect and disseminate information on accreditation and conformity assessment matters through advocacy programmes, the publication of reports, pamphlets, books, journals or any other publications.
  • Provide training, and other related services and promote research on accreditation and conformity assessment matters.

HISTORY OF KENAS
1984
National Calibration Service was established vide Legal Notice No. 8 of 1984 (Standards Act) and admitted by the Metrology Department at Kenya Bureau of Standards for accreditation of Independent Calibration Centres.
1995
Quality Systems Assessment Committee (QSAC) established vide Gazette Notice No. 2942, (Standards Act) for registration of persons, quasi-accreditation of certification bodies and the appointment of the first Chairperson.
1999
First IAF pre-peer evaluation led by Dr Sean Wloka and Mr Sean McCurtain funded by UNIDO.
2004
The name “KENAS” was coined by the Kenyan delegation to the first planning meeting - EAC Technical subcommittee meeting on Quality Assurance (QA) and accreditation at Bagamoyo, Tanzania.
2005
Kenya Accreditation Service Regulation enacted vide Kenya Gazette Supplement Number 22- (Standards Act)
2007
KENAS formally separates from KEBS and gets its first office in Nairobi South C.
2009
KENAS was formally established as an Independent Accreditation Body vide Legal Notice No.55 of 2009 (State Corporations Act, Cap.446)
2010
First KENAS Board led by Prof. Marion Mutugi
2011
First staff members employed.
2012
Official opening of KENAS offices in Upper Hill, Nairobi
2013
First ILAC/IAF Pre-peer evaluation done.
2017
KENAS attains international IAF MLA & ILAC MRA signatory status and AFRAC regional arrangement status in the scope of Testing, Calibration, Medical, Certification & Inspection.
2018
Launch of the KENAS/ILAC and IAF combined marks on accreditation certificates
2019
The Kenya Accreditation Service Bill is enacted by Parliament.
